Shoebill storks have been called the world’s most terrifying bird. These stately wading birds stalk the marshes of lake victoria in Uganda and elsewhere in tropical East Africa, snatching up prey with their unique, immediately recognizable bills. These include lungfish, Tilapias, catfish, frogs, snails, turtles, water snakes, rodents and monitors lizards among others. But there are a lot of misconceptions about shoebill storks—the first being that they're not actually storks.
Besides the whale headed storks, Mabamba swamp is home to many bird species which include weaver birds, Papyrus gonolek, lesser Jacana, Orange weaver, black Egret, Black Crake, African marsh harrier Black-faced Rufous Warbler, spur-winged geese, hammerkops, vultures etc. Your local guides will help in spotting and explaining these birds.
